SOLAR POWER GENERATION

Solar power is the conversion of sun radiation into electricity through the use of solar photovoltaic cells. This conversion takes place in the solar cell by photovoltaic effect.
A rooftop PV system is a photovoltaic system that has its electricity-generating solar panels mounted on the rooftop of a residential or commercial building or structure.

TYPES OF SOLAR POWER GENERATION
There are two types of system:
i) On-Grid System
ii) Off-Grid System

ON-GRID SYSTEM
These systems are designed to work with the grid alone. Thus, it is a combination of solar PV and grid. As these systems depend on the reference voltage provided by the grid for their operations, grid-tied systems do not work when the grid is down.

OFF-GRID SYSTEM
These systems are designed to operate independent of the grid, these systems sync with a diesel generator and/or batteries. Battery based systems used to be of smaller capacity due to the cost involved, but the rising cost of other power sources, and the lack of power at any cost has seen a steady increase in battery based system sizes.

COMPONENTS
Components required for Roof-top solar system are:
-
Solar panels that convert sunshine to DC electricity.
-
Inverters that convert DC electricity to AC from Cables :
-
DC cables convey current from panels to inverters and AC cables from inverters to loads
-
Mounting Structures : They support the panels on the rooftops
-
Electrical Peripherals: These include Junction Boxes, Earthing, Lightning Arrestors, and Conduits etc.
All of these are highly specific to the design of the power plant.

SIZE FOR DOMESTIC OR COMMERCIAL USE
Identifying the Solar Power plant size for your domestic or commercial premises depends on the following factors:
• Wattage of appliances to be run on Solar
• Monthly energy consumption from these appliances
• Energy Backup or Days of Autonomy required
• Roof space available for plant setup
Based on these factors, the power plant sizing can be accordingly done at your end.

MAINTENANCE
Solar photovoltaic panels require little maintenance – no need to wash or dust. It is, however, important to place panels where they will remain clear of shade and debris. Thus you will have to wipe them off if too much snow or leaves fall on them.
Solar hot water collection arrays don’t need much attention either. It does help to periodically use a window wash brush, biodegradable soap, and water to clean the tubes.
